UK Slots Sites: RTP, Volatility and Stake Limits
How we earn: some casino links on this page may pay us a commission if you sign up. It costs you nothing and never moves a casino up our list. We list only UK Gambling Commission licensed casinos. 18+. Full disclosure.
Quick answer Online slots in Great Britain have a legal stake limit. Adults aged 25 and over can stake up to £5 per spin, from 9 April 2025. Adults aged 18 to 24 can stake up to £2 per spin, from 21 May 2025. Every GB-licensed slots site must apply these limits.

What are the UK online slot stake limits?
The Gambling Commission set two limits on online slot stakes. Players aged 25 and over can bet a maximum of £5 per spin, in force from 9 April 2025. Players aged 18 to 24 can bet a maximum of £2 per spin, in force from 21 May 2025. The casino applies the right limit based on your verified age.
These limits apply to online slots at every casino licensed in Great Britain. You do not need to switch anything on. If you try to place a spin above your limit, the game should stop you. If a slots site lets you bet more than these amounts, check that it holds a UKGC licence.
| Your age | Maximum stake per spin | In force from |
|---|---|---|
| 25 and over | £5 | 9 April 2025 |
| 18 to 24 | £2 | 21 May 2025 |
How do you choose a UK slots site?
Start with the licence. Check that the casino holds an active casino remote licence on the UKGC register. Then look at the offer terms, the game lobby, the payment methods and the safer gambling tools. A large game count means little if the site is not licensed or the terms are unclear.
- Licence. Every casino in our table has an active UKGC casino remote licence, checked on 29 September 2026.
- Offer terms. Free spins are usually tied to one game. Check the wagering, now capped at 10x, and the expiry.
- Game information. Each slot should show its rules and return to player figure in its help screen.
- Safer gambling tools. Deposit limits, reality checks and time-outs should be easy to find.
Which slots sites are in our table?
Our table lists ten casinos with active UKGC licences: Unibet, bet365, Betway, Grosvenor Casinos, LeoVegas, Mr Vegas, 888casino, PlayOJO, Sky Casino and William Hill Vegas. We have not yet published game counts or RTP figures for any of them, because we only add those after checking the casino's own pages.
Six casinos have verified slots offers, all read on their own sites on 29 September 2026. Unibet: 300 free spins at £0.10 on Big Bass Splash for depositing and staking £30 on slots, 10x wagering, claim within 7 days, spins expire in 48 hours. Grosvenor: £40 bonus + 100 free spins on Big Bass Splash for a £20 first deposit, 10x deposit + bonus. 888casino: 200 free spins at £0.10 (code HELLO200FS) or a 100% bonus up to £100, 10x bonus, max £100. LeoVegas: 50 wager-free spins on Big Bass Splash, spins expire in 3 days. PlayOJO: 50 free spins at £0.10 on Big Bass Bonanza, no wagering. Sky Casino: 100 free spins for depositing and staking £10, 30 day expiry, wagering not stated in the offer text.
Mr Vegas and William Hill Vegas offers are not yet verified. See our casino bonuses hub for all six offers side by side.
Which guides are in this section?
This section links every slots guide we publish. Each one covers how slots work, the UK rules that apply to them, and what to check on a casino's own pages. Guides stick to verified facts and never quote an RTP, game count or offer we have not read at the source.
| Guide | What it answers | Link |
|---|---|---|

What does RTP mean on a slot?
RTP, or return to player, is the share of all money staked on a slot that the game is designed to pay back over a very large number of spins. It is a long-run average, not a prediction for your session. A slot with a high RTP can still lose you money quickly.
You will usually find the RTP in the game's help or information screen. Some slots are offered at more than one RTP setting, so the figure at one casino may differ from another. Check inside the game at the casino you are using rather than relying on a figure you read elsewhere. We do not publish RTP figures for casinos in our table until we have checked them ourselves.
How do slot features affect your spending?
Features such as fast spin speeds, autoplay and bonus buy options change how quickly you spend. The faster the spins, the more you stake per hour, even at the same stake per spin. The stake limits cap each spin, but they do not cap how many spins you play.
Some ways to keep control while playing slots:
- Set a deposit limit before you start and do not raise it mid-session.
- Turn on reality checks so the casino reminds you how long you have been playing.
- Decide your session budget in advance and stop when it is gone.
- Avoid chasing losses by increasing your stake.
- Take breaks. A time-out from your account settings can help.
Are slots winnings taxed in the UK?
Gambling winnings are generally not taxed for UK players. Gov.uk lists betting, lottery or pools winnings among the things you do not pay Capital Gains Tax on. This is not tax advice. If you have a complex situation, check with HMRC or a qualified adviser.
What slot terms should you know before you play?
Four terms explain most of what a slot does: RTP, volatility, stake per spin and paylines or ways to win. Features such as free spins rounds, autoplay and bonus buys change how quickly you spend. The glossary below gives plain definitions. The game's own help screen shows how each one applies to that game.

| Term | What it means | Why it matters to you |
|---|---|---|
| RTP (return to player) | The share of all stakes a slot is designed to pay back over a very large number of spins | It is a long-run average. It does not predict what you will win or lose in a session |
| Volatility | How a slot spreads its wins: many small wins, or fewer larger ones | Higher volatility can mean long runs without a win, so your budget can go faster |
| Stake per spin | The total amount you bet on one spin | Capped at £5 for adults 25 and over and £2 for 18 to 24 year olds in Great Britain |
| Paylines and ways to win | The patterns that count as a win on the reels | More lines do not mean better value. The RTP already accounts for them |
| Free spins feature | A bonus round inside the game, triggered by certain symbols | Different from free spins offered as a casino bonus, which carry their own terms |
| Bonus buy | An option to pay to enter a feature straight away | It concentrates a large share of your budget into one round |
| Autoplay | Spins that play one after another without you pressing the button | It speeds up play, so set limits before you use it |
What is slot volatility and why does it matter?
Volatility describes how a slot pays out over time. A low volatility slot tends to pay smaller wins more often. A high volatility slot tends to pay less often but can pay larger amounts. Two slots with the same RTP can feel completely different to play because of volatility, so it is worth checking both.
Not every game states its volatility clearly. Where it does, you will usually find it in the help or information screen alongside the RTP. If you are playing on a fixed budget, a higher volatility game can use it up faster without a win, so choose your session length and stake with that in mind.
Which stake limit applies to you?
The limit depends on your age. If you are 25 or over, the most you can stake on one online slot spin is £5. If you are 18 to 24, it is £2. The casino applies the right limit based on your verified age, so you do not choose it and you cannot switch it off.
The limits are set by the Gambling Commission and apply at every GB-licensed casino. They are not a target. Most players stake well below them, and your own budget should decide your stake. You must be 18 or over to play online slots in Great Britain at all.
How do paylines and bonus features work?
Paylines are the patterns across the reels that count as a win. Some slots use fixed lines, others use ways to win, where matching symbols on adjacent reels pay regardless of position. Bonus features, such as free spins rounds and multipliers, are part of the game's maths and are already built into its RTP.
That last point matters. A feature can feel like a bonus, but it is part of how the game pays back its designed share of stakes over time. A slot with more features is not more generous by default. Read the paytable in the help screen to see what each symbol and feature pays before you spin.
Do casino free spins offers work differently from in-game free spins?
Yes. Free spins from a casino offer are a promotion with their own terms, such as a fixed spin value, a named game, an expiry and wagering on winnings. In-game free spins are a feature of the slot itself, triggered during play. The first comes from the casino's promotions page; the second from the game's paytable.
Unibet's verified offer is an example of the first type: 300 spins at £0.10 each on Big Bass Splash for new GB customers who deposit and stake £30 on slots, with 10x wagering. The spin value is fixed by the offer at £0.10, well below both stake limits. PlayOJO's 50 spins and 888casino's 200 spins are also £0.10 each.
Wagering on any casino offer has been capped at 10 times since 19 January 2026. Check the expiry too. Unibet's spins expire 48 hours after you receive them, so claim them only when you have time to use them.
Do slots at different casinos pay the same?
Not always. The same slot can be offered at more than one RTP setting, so the figure at one casino may differ from another. The game's help screen at the casino you are using shows the setting that applies there. We do not publish RTP figures for casinos in our table until we have checked them ourselves.
The easiest habit is to open the help screen before your first spin on any new game. It shows the RTP, the paytable and the rules in one place, and takes less than a minute to read.
If a game does not show its RTP or rules clearly, that is a reason to choose a different game. Every slot at a GB-licensed casino should explain how it works before you stake anything on it.
How does RTP work out in pounds? A worked example
RTP is a long run average of how much a slot pays back from all stakes. Take a hypothetical slot with an RTP of 96%, used here only as an example. If you stake £1 per spin for 500 spins, you stake £500 in total. Over the very long run, the game would return about £480 of that, costing about £20.
That £20 is an average across huge numbers of spins, not a prediction for your session. In 500 spins you could finish well ahead or lose far more than £20. RTP tells you the price of play over time, not what will happen tonight.
| Hypothetical RTP (example) | Expected return on £500 staked | Expected cost |
|---|---|---|
| 94% | £470 | £30 |
| 96% | £480 | £20 |
| 97% | £485 | £15 |
The RTPs in this table are examples to show the maths. They are not the figures for any named game. Slots normally show their RTP in the help or information screen, and the same game can be offered at different RTP settings, so check the figure inside the game at the casino you use.
How do you find a slot's RTP?
Open the game, then open its information, help or paytable screen, usually through an i or menu icon. The RTP is normally listed there with the rules. Check it at the casino where you play, because the figure in the game itself is the one that applies to your spins there.
- Look for the phrase return to player or RTP in the game rules.
- Note whether the figure changes if you buy features or use an optional side bet, where offered.
- If you cannot find an RTP, ask the casino's support team before you play.
How far does the stake limit let you go in a session?
The stake limit caps each spin, not your session. At the £5 per spin limit for adults 25 and over, 100 spins can stake up to £500. At the £2 limit for 18 to 24 year olds, 100 spins can stake up to £200. Spins come quickly, so the total adds up faster than it feels.
| Number of spins | At £2 per spin (ages 18 to 24) | At £5 per spin (ages 25 and over) |
|---|---|---|
| 50 | £100 | £250 |
| 100 | £200 | £500 |
| 250 | £500 | £1,250 |
| 500 | £1,000 | £2,500 |
These are maximums, not targets. Most people stake far less per spin. The point of the table is that turnover grows with the number of spins, so a deposit limit and a session time limit do more to protect your budget than the per spin cap alone.
How long will a slots budget last? A worked example
Divide your budget by your stake, then allow for the house edge. With a £20 budget at £0.20 per spin, you have 100 spins of your own money before any wins. Wins get staked again, so you usually play more spins than that, but the edge still wears the balance down over time.
A rough guide, again using a hypothetical 96% RTP as the example: each £1 staked costs about 4p on average. At £0.20 per spin, 500 spins stake £100 and cost about £4 on average. Real sessions swing well above and below that, especially on high volatility slots, so set the budget as money you can afford to lose in full.
How do low and high volatility slots compare?
Low volatility slots tend to pay smaller wins more often. High volatility slots tend to pay less often, with larger but rarer wins. Two slots can have the same RTP and very different volatility, which changes how quickly a budget can run out. The game's own information screen often gives a volatility rating.
| Feature | Low volatility (general) | High volatility (general) |
|---|---|---|
| How often wins land | More often | Less often |
| Typical win size | Smaller | Larger when they come |
| Effect on a small budget | Tends to last longer | Can run out quickly |
| What to check | The paytable and RTP | The paytable, RTP and any feature buy price |
These are general descriptions, not ratings of any named game. Pick volatility to suit your budget, not the size of a possible win.
What is the difference between RTP and hit frequency?
RTP says how much a slot pays back on average over the long run. Hit frequency says how often a spin returns some win, of any size. A slot can pay something on many spins while still returning less than you staked on most of them. Where a game lists hit frequency, it appears in its information screen.
A hypothetical example makes the difference clear. Imagine a slot where one spin in four returns a win. On a £1 spin, many of those wins might be 20p or 50p, which the screen may still celebrate as a win. You staked £1 and got back less, so your balance went down. Watch your balance, not the win animations.
Does a recent win or loss change your next spin?
No. Each spin on a licensed online slot is decided independently by the game's random number generator, so past results do not make the next spin more or less likely to win. A slot is never due a win after a losing run, and a big win does not make a loss more likely next.
This matters because the belief that a win is due is one of the most common reasons people keep playing past their budget. If you notice that thought, take it as a sign to stop the session. Deposit limits, reality checks and time-outs in your account can help you stick to that decision.
Where can you get help if slots stop being fun?
If you are spending more time or money on slots than you planned, stop and use the tools available. Every GB-licensed casino must offer deposit limits, time-outs and self-exclusion. For free, confidential support, call the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133, open 24/7.
You must be 18 or over to play. GAMSTOP lets you block yourself from all GB-licensed gambling sites and apps for free, and BeGambleAware offers free advice and tools. Our safer gambling page has the full list.
Your questions, answered
What is the maximum stake on UK online slots?
Adults aged 25 and over can stake up to £5 per spin, from 9 April 2025. Adults aged 18 to 24 can stake up to £2 per spin, from 21 May 2025. Every GB-licensed casino must apply these limits.
Do I need to turn the slot stake limit on?
No. GB-licensed casinos apply the limit automatically based on your verified age. If you try to place a spin above your limit, the game should stop you. A site that lets you exceed it may not hold a UKGC licence.
What does RTP mean on a slot?
Return to player is the share of all money staked on a slot that it is designed to pay back over a very large number of spins. It is a long-run average, not a forecast for your session. Check the figure in the game's help screen.
Which slots offer have you verified?
Six, checked 29 September 2026: Unibet, Grosvenor, 888casino, LeoVegas, PlayOJO and Sky Casino. For example, Unibet gives 300 free spins at £0.10 on Big Bass Splash for depositing and staking £30 on slots, and PlayOJO gives 50 free spins on Big Bass Bonanza with no wagering.
What is slot volatility?
Volatility describes how a slot spreads its wins. Low volatility games tend to pay smaller wins more often, and high volatility games pay less often but can pay more. Two slots with the same RTP can play very differently, so check the help screen for both figures.
Which slot stake limit applies to me?
It depends on your age. Adults aged 25 and over can stake up to £5 per spin on online slots, from 9 April 2025. Adults aged 18 to 24 can stake up to £2 per spin, from 21 May 2025. The casino applies the limit from your verified age.
What does a 96% RTP mean in pounds?
Using 96% as a hypothetical example, staking £500 in total would cost about £20 on average over the very long run, because the game returns about £480. It is an average, not a prediction: a single session can end far above or below that.
Where do I find the RTP of a slot?
Open the game's information, help or paytable screen, usually through an i or menu icon. The RTP is normally listed with the rules. Check it at the casino you play at, as the same game can be offered at different RTP settings.
